about

SpinTunes 21 Round 1
Y-Axis: Write and record a song about some kind of vertical position or movement, either literal or metaphorical: up, down, height, depth, rising, falling, tall things, short things, etc.

There’s sobriety, there’s addiction, and then there is a place in between - a controlled yo yo of narcotic highs and lows.

This song is about that moment, after being high for an extended period of time, where the subject consciously understands that it’s time to come back down. He understands that it won’t be a graceful landing, but it’s a necessary transition.

Vertigo is my term for that anxious anticipation of the “crash.”

Personal notes:
Not particularly pleased with the outcome - it never sounds the same as it does in my head. Would have liked another verse/bridge/chorus, but I was lucky to get what I got in the time I had to work on it. There is an awkward tempo change at the end (110 to 125 bpm) - only because the initial tempo didn't quite work. Not sure how I could have smoothed out that transition. Also, I just got back into the classroom, so my voice was a bit shot from lecturing all week.
Eh, another song in the bucket...

LYRICS

High on the rooftops
Careless steps and nothing to fear
And it seems that the trail is gone

Slip from the tightrope
Hanging and not wanting to fall
As I drink up the vertigo

And where is my head if it’s not in the clouds
I want to come down, want to come down
And it seems that going to let go

Down on the stage
And I cannot see who’s pulling the strings
But I guess it’s irrelevant

Dance in the lighthouse
Waving other ships to move on
As I reach for my medicine

And where are my feet if they’re not on the ground
I want to come down, want to come down
And it seems that I want to let go…

So it seems this stint is ending here
Long lamenting ladders disappeared
Now my only way back home is to fall
It will take some time to find my way
Chances are I shall return someday
To swim in the fray of vertigo
