Spintunes 19 Round 2: Anachronism. Retell all or part of an existing story (historical, fictional, mythological, etc.), setting it in a different time period (and, optionally, location) from the original.
I chose Plato's Allegory of the Cave.
SUMMARY (taken from
Masterclass.com)
Plato uses the cave as a symbolic representation of how human beings live in the world, contrasting reality versus our interpretation of it. These two ideas reflect the two worlds in the story: the world inside the cave, and the world outside. For the prisoners in the cave, the shadows on the wall created by firelight are all they know to be real. If one of the prisoners breaks free and witnesses the outside world, they will come to understand that as the true reality. However, when the freed prisoner returns to the darkness of the cave, their eyes will have now been blinded by the light of the sun, and their fellow prisoners still inside the cave will believe that it is the outside world that is harmful; to them, that truth is not worth seeking.
My take: Based on various studies, Fox News is one of the least reliable sources of information--Tucker Carlson even admitted it is more "entertainment" than news. And similar studies show that Fox News viewers tend to be the least informed and the least flexible in their thinking. Like Plato's Cave, they only know or believe what they see on Fox... This song is about someone who found a world outside the Fox echo chamber and has returned to reveal the truth to others who are still fiercely loyal.
To any listeners who happen to watch Fox News, please understand that this song is not about making fun of anybody--it is about critical thinking and social consideration. I do not believe I (or my political affiliation) have all the answers, nor am I saying that similar shortsightedness doesn't occur in liberal circles. However, I do personally make a genuine effort to accept reality, facts, and truth as they present themselves, for better or worse, and reject inaccurate ideas and hypocrisy. And I find it increasingly more difficult to see how many others are incapable or unwilling to do the same. In my experience, Fox News viewers (including family members) most consistently show this kind of obstinacy.
Additional note: I suspect that any judges (or any listener, for that matter) who happen to watch Fox News might not like what they hear here. If this is the case, I just hope my ideas spark a bit of contemplation instead of outright dismissal.
Writing/Recording: I had to find a balance between referencing the original allegory and adding context to the new story. Also, I had a difficult time picking which topics to mention - lots of provocative material, but I wanted to make sure they were things that Fox has covered, and not just various Trumpisms.
The 50's rock n roll vibe in the middle of the song might seem like a random musical choice, especially for ancient Greek philosophy. My rationale: many older MAGA supporters, in the absence of a clear definition of Trump's motto, might believe that the 1950's was the "great" America they want to return to. You will notice that this section is where the specific conservative ideas begin.
I was unsure of whether I could (or would) actually pull this off--messed around with various ideas/lyrics on and off for days. Happy with most of the lyrics, but some miss the mark. I had less than a day and a half to record, and totally forgot about the opening lyrics, so kind of had to rush that last minute. But besides a few other mixing/singing inconsistencies, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Not bad for iPad Garageband.
